Such names were common in Ireland soon after the introduction of Christianity. O'Donovan, in Irish Penny Journal, p. 330. Comp. Gilchrist, Gillespie, &c. John Fitz-Patrick, descended from the ancient monarchs of Ireland, was ancestor of the Earls of Ossory, who became extinct in 1818.
