FLAKEFIELD, Fleckfield: From the place named Flakefield in the parish of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, William Flaikfeilde was burgess of Glasgow in 1562, and the Rev. David Fleckfield was minister of Balfron from 1691 till 1729 (Strothendrick, p. 28). David Flaikfield, wobster in Carmyle, parish of Monkland, is in record in 1611 (Campsie), and John Flaikfield, wobster, was admitted burpess of Glasgow in 1619 as eldest son of David Flaikfield (Burgesses). The story told by Anderson (Scot. Nat., II, p. 218) of the origin of the name is inaccurate as the surname is at least a century older.
