Flatley Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Flaitile A sept of Uí Fiachrach in Co. Sligo, much confused with Flattery. SIF 70

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

These two names are said to be basically the same, originally Ó Flaithfhileadh in Irish, this being contracted to Ó Flaithile and Ó Flaitile anglice Flatley. O'Donovan's suggestion that this is in turn was corrupted to Flattery is no doubt sound up to a point. It would appear, however, that while the two names are to a large extent synonymous they represent nevertheless at least two distinct septs. We must not overlook the authority of the Four Masters in whose Annals the name Ó Flaithre occurs four times in entries relating to Ulster between 971 and 1166, the men in question being termed King of Ulidia and Lord of Lecale; while in the same early period we find Ó Flaithfliileadh in Offaly. Now Offaly is the part of the country with which the name Flattery is chiefly associated-in the “census” of 1659 it is returned as a principal Irish name in three different baronies of King's County (Offaly). In modern times Flatley is numerous in north Connacht where the O'Flatleys of Moy were one of the Hy Fiachrach septs and Carrowflatley is a place in Co. Sligo. Flattery is also found there as well as in Offaly. At the present time both names are found in Co. Galway and Mr. P. J. Kennedy informs me that here Flattery is definitely a corruption of Flatley, the former being now the more numerous. Further confusion may arise from the fact that in some old records O'Flattery has been equated with O'Flaherty through clerical error.
