(from an ancestor's occupation) or (from a personal characteristic) Flaxman is a trade name that denotes a dealer in flax, flaxseed oil, or hemp. Or it may refer to the color of a person’s hair. Other variations of the name are Flacksman, Flax, Flaks, Flexner.

— Rabbi Benzion Kaganoff

A dresser of flax, or a spinner. In old authors "flax-wife" signifies a female spinner who is married, probably to distinguish her from the spinster, or maiden of the distaff. The records of Castle Combe shew the existence in that district of a family who in the reign of Edw. III. were called Spondel, most probably a provincialism for "spindle," in allusion to the spinning trade carried on by them. One of the family is described as "Johannem Spoundel dictum Flexmangere," or fiax-monger, and twenty years later this person, or a descendant, is simply described as "Johannes Flexman." See Scrope's Hist, of Castle Combe, reviewed in Quarterly Rev., vol. xcii., p. 291.
