From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

FLEX: From the lands of Flex near Hawick. Richard de Flex of the county of Roxburgh rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a crescent enclosing a star and S' Ricardi de Flechis (Bain, II, p. 199,531). As Richard del Fleckes he was juror on an inquest held at Dumfries in 1304 (ibid., 1588). Alexander of Flex was juror on an inquest at Roxburgh in 1361 (ibid., IV, 62), and in the following year he witnessed a charter to the monks of Coldingham Priory (Raine, 369). Thomas Flex appears as a secular of Elgin cathedral in 1343 (Rose, p. 118), and in 1380 the lands of Fiex belonged to Alexander Flex (Bain, IV, p. 65). In 1511 the lands of Flekkis were part of the Douglas of Drumlanrig barony of Hawick (RMS.).
