Flindt Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Flint.' 'In Domesday we have in Suffolk an Alwin Flint' (Lower, Patronymica Britannica). Mr. Lower further says, 'Our Anglo-Saxon ancestors had a subordinate deity whom they named Flint, and whose idol was an actual flint-stone of large size. The name of the god would readily become the appellation of a man' (ibid). The compound Flinthard, manifestly an early personal name, is found in the Hundred Rolls.

Jacobus Flinthard, Warwickshire 1273. Hundred Rolls.

John Flinchard, Essex, ibid.

John Flint, or Fleynt, Buckinghamshire, ibid.

Sivardus Flynt, 21 Richard II: Furness Coucher Book.

Willelmus Flynt, walker, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

Flint is a common surname in the Poll Tax of 1379 (Yorks). I only furnish one instance. The name is scattered hither and thither without prefix. There can be no doubt it was a personal name. Steel (which see) enjoyed a similar popularity; compare the German Flindt.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Robert Flint, wobster in Aytoun, 1628 (Lauder). John fflint was warded in the Canongate Tolbooth, Edinburgh, 1683 (BOEC., VIII, p. 153), and David Flint was dean of guild in Aberdeen, 1752 (Guildry, p. 203). Bardsley says the surname is common in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Not likely, I think, to be local from Flint in Wales, although J. de Flint appears in records of Carnarvon, 1352. Aluuin Flint was an under-tenant in Suffolk, England, in 1086 (Evans, p. 89), and Gottschald (Deutsche Namenkunde) has Flinsch, from MHG. vlins 'Kiesel. Feuerstein.'.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Our Anglo-Saxon ancestors had a subordinate deity whom they named Flint, and whose idol was an actual flint-stone of large size. The name of the god would readily become the appellation of a man, and that would in time become hereditary as a surname. Such it had become, without any prefix, at the date of the H.R., and even in Domesday we have in Suffolk an Alwin Flint. The town of Flint, in North Wales, may however have a claim to its origin.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Local. Derived from a market town of that name, near the sea, in Flintshire, Wales, which gives name to the county.
