FOLLIOT, FOLIOT, FFOLLIOTT: An old Fr, epithet formed from the extinct verb foller, to play the fool, to be merry or frolicsome. Comp. Follett. The family came into England at or soon after the Conquest. The surname has become historical from Gilbert Foliot, bishop of Hereford, the staunch defender of Henry II. against the demands of Thomas a Becket. One night as he lay ruminating on the quarrel of the king and the archbishop, a terrible and unknown voice sounded in his cars the words: —

A baronial family. Before the Conquest, Lord Roger Foliot in 1050 granted Omonville, Normandy, to Lessay Abbey (Gall. Christ. xi. 237). William Folet of Kent, 1086 (Domesd.), was father of Otbert and Adelulph, predecessors of Roger Foliott, who in 1165 held a barony of fifteen knights’ fees in Northants (Lib. Niger; Bridges, Northants, i. 234). Several branches of this family existed in England t. Henry II., from one of which descended the family of De Ryther. See Ryder.
