Local, from residence by a ford or stream-crossing place. Thomas de Furd was presbyter, diocese of St. Andrews, 1406 (RPSA., p. 11), and William Forde of Scotland had payment for his wages in 1489 (Bain, IV, 1551). Adam Fuideheld the lands of Burnecastell in 1493 (Laing, 217), and William Furde of Burncastel witnessed a retour of special service in 1505 (Home, 29). George Fuird, 'flescher, indueller in Innemcs,' was accused in 1603 of buying 'of quheit plaidis fra unfrie men in the Chanonrie of Ross' (Rec. Inv., II, p. 9). Patrick Fuird in Simprein, 1653, Alexander Foord in Hilton, 1677, and others of the name appear in Lauder Commissariot Record. Isobel Foorde in Pitlandie, parish of Monydie, 1688 (Dunkeld), and John Foord in Mosshouses, 1690 (RRM., III, p. 112). Foourd 1750, Fovrd 1675, Furd 1551, Fwrd 1689.
