Thomas Fute is recorded in Brechin, 1450 (REB., I, 158), Robert Fut was a tenant under the monks of Cupar-Angus Abbey, c. 1520 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 300), and John Foot appears in Brakywell, 1652 (Dunblane). William Fute of Auchlansky in record, 1683 (Inquis., 6489), and several persons named Futt are recorded in Glendevon and Fossoway in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Dunblane).
Probably from residence near the ' foot' of a mountain. This surname was hereditary from the time of the Conqueror. Among the undertenants of Domesday we have an Ernui Fot in Cheshire, and a Godwin Fot in Kent. The descendants of the latter gave the prefix to Foot's Cray. Fot is the common spelling in H.R.
As a Cornish name, perhaps from foute, a lane. Samuel Foote, the comedian, who was a native of Truro, changed his name from Foot to Footo upon settling in London.
The name of Foot was represented by a family in Mapouder parish in the latter half of last century; and at the same time there lived Joseph Foot, M. D., in Castleton, near Sherborne (H.).
