(French. De la Force). From force (Dan. fors, Old Norse id.), in the north of England, a waterfall or cascade. Hence the surname Wilberforce, formerly Wilberfosse, from Wilberfoss co. York, named from one Williber, or Williberg.
Gerelm de Forz in 1165 was one of the Barons of the French Vexin (Feod. Norm. Duchesne); William de Forz was Earl of Albemarle in Englaud. William and Isabella de Forz occur, c. 1272 (RPI). Gerelm and Helie de Forz and Supplicius de Fors are mentioned in Normandy 1180-98 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). Robson mentions the name as Forts or De Fortibus.
