From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of local origin from the lands of Fordyce in the Banffshire parish of the same name. John Fordise was vicar of Athy, 1460, and Johannes Fordys, perhaps the same person, was vicar of Garvok, 1464 (RAA., II, p. 115,142). The Fordyces were ranked as a sept of the so-called "Clan Forbes." In 1541 there is record of the lands of Tarcastell and Edinquheill in the sheriffdom of Elgin being in the king's hands through decease of Helene Fordyce (ALHT., VIII, p. 9). William Fordyce in Carskellie appears as a charter witness at Rothemay in 1567 (RMS., V, 339), and Johne Foirdyse, saidlar, is in record in Elgin in 1574 (Elgin, I, p. 148). Alexander Fordyce was cautioner for Thomas Maitland in Monleyth in 1608, and John Fordyse in Tofthills, parish of Kintor, was under caution to appear when called upon in 1659 (RSCA., II, p. 109; III, p. 58). James and John ffordyce in the parish of Rothemay appear in the valuation roll of 1690 (Records of county of Banff, p. 271), and George ffordyce in Achincreive was appointed constable in 1702 (ibid., p. 227).
