FOREHOUSE: William Forehouse witnessed an instrument of sasine in the berony of Dirleton in 1438 (Laing, 116), and George Fourrous witnessed a similar instrument in 1519 (ibid., 316). David Forros or Fowrus was bailie of Haddington in 1537—39 (James 11, 21; Mill, Plays, p. 250), and George Fourrois was sheriff in Haddington in 1543 (James II, p. 41). John Fores who rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the bailies of the burgh of Haddington in 1561 (ER., XIX, p. 176) is probably the John Fourhous, tenant under Newbattle Abbey in 1563 (Neubotle, p. 330), and the John Foirhous who appears as provost of the burgh in 1565 (ER., XIX, p. 297). Patrick Forhous was chancellor of Dunblane in 1545 (CMN., 61), John Fourrois was a monk of Melrose in 1569 (RHM., I, 41), and Thomas Forrous was witness at Gullane, 1579 (Laing, 979). John Forhous or Forus was member of Scots parliament for Haddington, 1567 (Hanna, II, p. 494). From some obsolete place of the name. There is Forehouse near Kilbarchan, but foregoing references all point to an East Coast locality.
