Of local origin from Forgan, a village in the parish of Forgandenny, Fife, the old name of which was Forgrund. Maijory, wife of Walter de fforgrund, burgess of Berwick (post 1147), sold to the Abbey of Kelso an annual rent of two marks, which she derived from a house in Berwick (Kelso, 31, 34). Archembaldus de Forgrund was a charter witness in Fife c. 1170—78 (RPSA., p. 41,265). Families of this name are said to have been for centuries located in the parishes of Cameron, Cambee, and Kilconquhar. James Berwick Forgan (1852—1924), born in St. Andrews, was president of the First National Bank of Chicago, and a pillar in the American financial world.
