Perhaps from English Forman (13th century), older Formann, Latinized Formannus. Robert Foreman of Edinburghshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a fluer-de-lys and S' Roberti Porman (Bain, II, p. 208,555). Adam Forman was scutifer to Arnchibald, earl of Douglas, 1426 (RMS., II, 84; Macdonald, 954). John Forman witnessed sealing of an inquest anent a fishing on the Tweed, 1467 (RD., p. 359), and in 1474 payment was made to John Forman, Scottish merchant (Bain, IV, 1412). Schir Johne Forman of Ruthirfurde and Eufame Formane had special respite and protection, 1504 (Trials, I, p. 42). Andrew Forman, son of the laird of Hutton in Rerwickshire, became archbishop of St. Andrews, 1514, and died in 1521 (Macdonald, 955). Martin Forman rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the burgh of Banff, 1562 (ER., XIX, p. 203), and Forman is said to have been quite common in the parish of Rattray at one time. The Poll Book shows four separate householders of the name about 1696 (AEL., p. 83). John Forman, tailor in Hutton, 1743 (Lauder).
