From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A surname found in Fifeshire, originating from the lands of Forret in the parish of Logie. In 1248 Symon de Foret was one of the witnesses to a quit claim by John Gallerd de Keeth (RD., 170). John Forate de eodem was one of an assize in 1466 for clearing the merches of the lands of Gaytmilk belonging to the Abbey of Dunfermline (ibid., 458). Elias Foraete was appraiser of the land of the Hauch and Petconnoquhy, Fife, 1505 (Wemyss, II, p. 125). Thomas Forrat was tenant of the land of Borrwfeld in 1520 (Rental), and Thomas Forret, vicar of Dollar, one of the earliest martyrs for the reformed doctrine in Scotland, was burned at the stake in 1538. James Foret was burgess of Glasgow in 1550 (Protocols, I), James Forret, portioner of Polduff in 1572 (Wemyss, II, p. 206), and John Forret of that Ilk served on an inquest made at Perth in 1579 (Athole, p. 715). Andrew Forrett was a culteller in St. Andrews in 1583, and Mrs. Jean fforat or fforrat was detained a prisoner in the Canongate Tolbooth of Edinbergh in 1684 (BOEC., IX, p. 142,148). John Forret of Fingask was one of those who took part in the Fife Expedition to the Lewis in 1598 (HP., II, p. 270n), David Forret had a confirmation charter of part of the vill and lands of Drumeldrie in 1606 (RD., p. 498), and in 1694 James Forret was retoured heir of David Forret, portioner of Drummeldrie (Retours, Fife, 1358). In the seventeenth century the lands of Forret passed into possession of Sir David Balfoer (of the Denmylne family), who, on being appointed a lord of session in 1674 took the tide of Lord Forret (Scot.
