Fortescue Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Anglo-French-Latin) Strong Shield [Anglo-FrenchO.French (mod. Fr, écu, shield); Latin fort-is, strong + scut-um, shield] This name was Latinized in mediæval records de Ford Scuto.

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

Doubtless from Old French forte escu, "strong shield," referring probably to such a weapon carried by the primary bearer of the name. This, together with the punning motto of the family, "Forte Scutum salus ducum," ' a strong shield is the safety of commanders,' doubtless led to the fabrication of the legend that the founder of the family, one Sir Richard le Fort, at the battle of Hastings was the safety of his commander, by bearing a strong shield in front of him. If we may trust genealogists of the old school, the field of Hastings witnessed many wonderful scenes and exploits; but as the Norman Duke was quite able to carry his own shield we may dismiss this story to the regions of romance. The Norman origin of the family is, however, pretty certain, and their residence at Winston in Devonshire, temp. King John, seems fully proved. Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men. If the name originated in any military incident, it is more likely to have taken place in the Holy Land, where two members of the family are said to have fought under Coeur de Lion.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Strong shield. Sir Richard Le Forte (the brave), one of the leaders in the army of William the Conqueror, who had the good fortune to protect his chief at the battle of Hastings, by bearing before him a massive shield, hence acquired the addition of the French word escue, a shield, to his name.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

John Fortescue, his descendant, had a confirmation of W. in 1208 (Pole, 310). Robert F., his son, held a knight’s fee in capite, as of the honour of Mortaine (Testa de Neville). From this family descend the Earls Fortescue, and other noble houses.

The Norman People (1874)

The name of Fortescue, which is also found in the adjacent county of Hunts, had its origin with the distinguished Devonshire family of the name that resided at Winston in that county as far back as the reign of John (L.). The Northamptonshire Fortescues owned part of the living of Pateshull in the time of Elizabeth, and last century they owned the living of Rothwell (Wh.).
