User-submitted Reference
The Fosters originated from a tribe that covered an area from the north of England right up to south of Edinburgh with a "splinter group" to the west of Stirling central Scotland.
There is a very strong possibility that the Foster surname came from a knight following 1066, who was given lands in Northumbria and to this day the Duke of Northumberland holds the land thereof and there are a large number of Fosters are about the place.
I married a Foster from the north of England and as a matter of interest her grandmother was "cook" to the Duke of Northumberland back in the 20-30s.
My email to you therefore means that the name Foster (apart from perhaps being derived from Forresters inclusive of a French derivation) could and probably does come from the tribe mentioned above or perhaps from the Norman knight de Forrest, who was "given" lands in the North of England.
