Fotheringham Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From Fotheringham in the parish of Inverarity in Angus. The name is a corruption of ancient Fotheringhay, from the manor and castle of that name in Northamptonshire, which was held in the twelfth century by the royal family of Scotland as part of the Honour of Huntingdon (Moore, The Lands of the Scottish kings in England, p. 19). The name assumed its present form from the resemblance of final ay to m in old records. Dominus Robert de ffodryngay was witness to a Maule charter of 1261 (Panmure, II, 85). Master Henry of Fottyngham, presumably an Englishman, was rector of the church of Taruedal in Ross in 1274 (OPS., II, p. 522). Walter de Fodringgeye was one of the executors of the will of Dervorgilla, wife of John de Baliol in 1291 (Bain, II, 535). Roger de Foderingeye, vicar of the church of Kilmor (Kilmuir-Easter) in the county of Ross, and Huwe de Foderingeye of the county of Perth rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., II, p. 200,214). The seal of the latter bears a stag's head cabossed and S' Hvgon' de Foderigay. Henry de Foddiynghame who was deputy (locum tenens) of the sheriff of Perth in 1358 (ER., I, p. 553) is probably the Henry de Fodrynghay who witnessed a Brechin document in 1364 (REB., I, 20). William de Foddiynghame was sheriff of Banff in 1358 (ER., I, p. 548), Robyn of Fodryigame was one of the assize on the marches of Woodwrae in 1388 (Bamff, p. 22), Alexander Forigham (probably for Forigham = Foringham) appears as a witness in Brechin in 1464 (REB., II, 103), and Thomas Fodringhame of Poury (now Powrie) was witness to a charter by John Jardin of Appilgarth in 1476 (Home, 23). The Fotheringhams of Ballindean, Perthshire, are descended from the family of Powrie in Angus, a race that settled early in the province and are said to have derived their descent from Henry de Fodringhay who received the lands of Balewny, near Dundee, from Robert II previous to 1377 (RMS., I, 664). The name early travelled to Orkney, Richard Fodrungame being recorded as one of the "lawrikmen" there in 1446 (REO., p. 51). Foddringam 1482, Foderingam 1472, Foderinghame 1511, Fodiheryngham 1424, Fodingam 1486, Fodringam 1438, Fodringaym 1450, Fordryngham 1390, Fothergem 1516, Fothrengam 1483, Fothrenghame 1584, Fothringam 1494, Fothryngam 1450, Fothryngame 1427, Fothiynhame 1531, Fotringham 1565.
