Foulis Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
"The surname is doubtless taken from a locality, and may have arisen in the neighbourhood of one of the half dozen places in Scotland called Foulis or Fowlis" (Stodart, II, p. 197). A Reginald de Foulis witnessed a charter by the High Steward in the reign of Alexander II. Thor de Foules witnessed a charter by William Manle of Foules a. 1260 (RPSA., p. 264). William de Foulis, perpetual vicar of Kirkis, i.e. Kirktoun of S. Ninian, Stirling, 1295 (Cambus., 111). Sir Alan de Foulis, canon of St. Andrews, 1305 (Bain, IV, 1807). Master William of Fouleys who had a safe conduct into England, 1422 (Bain, IV, 915) is probably Master William Foulles (Foulls, or Foulys), provost of Bothivell and custodian of the privy seal, 1429—31 (REB., II, 23; Home, 19; Bain, IV, 1029—32). Thomas de Fowlis was supprior of Abirbrothoc, 1425 (RAA., II, 59), and Alexander Foulis was commissioner to Parliament for Linlithgow, 1469 (APS., II, p. 93). Michael Fowlis, friar preacher in Aberdeen, 1486 (REA., II, p. 300), Andrew Faulis, witness in Glasgow, 1552 (Protocols, I), Henry Foulis held land in Linlithgow, 1549 (Laing, 552), David Fowllis retoured in lands in barony of Evendaill (Avondale), 1612 (Retours, Lanark, 97), and Robert Foulles, advocate, 1633 (ibid., 177). Foulis 1679, Fowlis 1592, Follis 1450, Fawlis 1574. compare Foulds.
The ancestor of the baronet was in great favour with king James VI. of Scotland, whom he accompanied into England. The name is probably derived from one of the two parishes of Perthshire now called Fowlis-Easter and Fowlis-Wester. In charters it is latinized De Foliis.
The name is derived from an ancestor of the family, a Norman, bearing three leaves, called feuilles, in his arms.
The surname of Foulis is of Norman extraction. Their first British ancestor came into England either at or before the Conquest, and his armorial bearings were three leaves, called "Feuilles" in the old Norman; it is certain that the name was either given to the family while residents of South Britain, or else assumed by him who first settled in Scotland in the reign of Malcom Canmore, when surnames were then first adopted.
