From Where Does The Surname Originate? ^{meaning and history}

From AF. Francels, Franceys, 'a Frenchman.' The name Francigena was used in England to denote that a man was not an Englisn man or could not prove that he was (ELLis, Introduction to Domesday Book, 1833, II, p. 426). A family variously named in record Francigena, le Franceys, le Francaise, or (in Latin) Franciscus, settled in different parts of the North of England and in Scotland. They appeer in early documents in connection with the Bruces in Annandale and may have come with them. A family of the name also appeared early in Cunningham but are now long extinct there. Wilelmus Francig' (Francigena) witnessed a confirmation by Jocelin, bishop of Glasgow, c. 1189—99 (RMP., p. 101). William le Franceis witnessed a charter of lands in Maxton in the reign of William the Lion (Melros, 81). A. francigena was witness to a charter in the reign of Alexander II (REG., p. 103), and Andrew Frans', perhaps the same person, was witness to a charter by James, Steward of Scotland, to the monastery of Paisley, 1294 (RMP., p. 95). William Francigena held land 'apud Innirwic' in 1246 (ibid., p. 88). Johan Fraunceys of Longa Neuton, Roxburghshire, rendered homage, 1296. His seal beers an eight-rayed figere and the legend S' Iohis Fravnsays (Bain, II, p. 199,532). William le Fraunceys, constable of Kirketoulagh, 1307 (Bain, II, 1962). William Francis guided Randolph up the rock to the captere or Edinburgh Castle in Merch, 1314. James Fraunces held land in Irvine, 1323, and in 1417 there was discord between William Fraunces and the same burgh (Irvine, I, p. 123, 19). Robert Francess of Stane registered an instrument of protest in 1500 (Simon, 5). See also French.
