(from a place name) Frankel originated in the province of Franken (Franconia). It first appears among non-Jews in the fourteenth century and among Jews in the sixteenth century. It was originally assumed by Jews from Franconia who settled in Vienna. After the Jews were expelled from Vienna in 1669, the Frankel family scattered all over Europe. A number of families belong to this same original family, among them: Theomim, Munk, Heller and Wallerstein, Zwillinger, Mirels, and Neumark.
