By some believed to be from Latin frater, a 'brother' or member of a monastic order, and the same in meaning as ME. frere. The name, however, is more likely to be from ME. freytour, a monastic refectory, and by extension of meaning, keeper of the monastic refectory. It might also be a curtailed form of ME. fraterer, superintendent of the frater. John Frater was tenant on Abbey lands of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 526). John Frater in Lonbauche, 1663, and John Fratter in Roughauc , 1666 (RRM., II. p. 77,202). George Fraiter, portioner of Langhaugh, 1755 (Heirs, 282). Freter 1648.
