By some believed to be from Latin frater, a 'brother' or member of a monastic order, and the same in meaning as ME. frere. The name, however, is more likely to be from ME. freytour, a monastic refectory, and by extension of meaning, keeper of the monastic refectory. It might also be a curtailed form of ME. fraterer, superintendent of the frater. John Frater was tenant on Abbey lands of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 526).
