Frederiksen Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Frederiksen is a Nordic surname. The name means 'son of Frederik'. In Denmark and Norway the ending, -sen, is a common patronym. In Sweden, Iceland and the Faroese Islands, the -son ending is the most common. -sen and -son both stem from the the Old Norse word, son, meaning 'son'. Therefore, a name ending with -son or -sen means 'the son of'; e.g. Bjørnsen (son of Bjørn), Jensen (son of Jens), Frederiksen (son of Frederik), Svensson (son of Sven) etc. This has long been a name tradition in Scandinavia. Though these names literally mean 'son of', these traditions are no longer kept, meaning that a surname like 'Svendsen' can be hundreds of years old, and therefore does not represent a parents' name, but instead a person related to you. In Iceland, this name tradition is still being practiced.
