FRESKYN: Freskyn of Moray is said to have been a Fleming or person of Flemish descent whom David I took north with him and settled in Moray, when he suppressed an insurrection of the natives of that province in 1130. Freskyn held lands of Strabrok in West Lothian but he is nowhere designated 'le Fleming' or 'Flandrensis' as was the custom when Flemings were mentioned in early charters.

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

FRESKYN: Freskyn of Moray is said to have been a Fleming or person of Flemish descent whom David I took north with him and settled in Moray, when he suppressed an insurrection of the natives of that province in 1130. Freskyn held lands of Strabrok in West Lothian but he is nowhere designated 'le Fleming' or 'Flandrensis' as was the custom when Flemings were mentioned in early charters. William, son of Freskyn witnessed the charter by Malcolm IV to Berowald Flandrensis of the land of Innes at Christmas 1160. Retween 1165—71 he had a charter from William the Lion of the lands of Strabrok, Duffus, Rosisle, Inchikel, etc. This charter is now missing but was seen and copied by Nisbet (II, App., p. 183). He witnessed several charters between 1187—99, and died c. 1204. Ret ween 1204—11 Hugh Fretheskyn was witness to grant of a church to the Abbey of Arnbroath (RAA., I, 33). Frethesldn, persona de Dufglas,' witnessed a charter of the cherch of Brennath to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1202—12 (Kelso, 371). As Friskyne, decanus Moraviensis, he also witnessed a charter by Malcolm, earl of Fife, c. 1214—26 (RHM., II, 1), and as Fertheskyn he appears c. 1218—26 as 'decanus ecclesie Moraviensis' (RAA., I, 79). Freskums de Laundeles of Roxburghshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 200), and Freskyn de Chen was decanus Aberdonensis, 1321 (REA I, p. 47). Several persons named Friskine occer in the Kirk Session Records of Gask, Perthshire, the first being Andros Friskine who was admitted an elder in 1669, and eight of the name occur in Cask and Findogask in seventeenth century, but the name does not now exist there. James Frisken was portioner of Hutton, 1772 (Lauder). Firskin 1727, Fiscam 1725, Frisken seventeenth century.
