Frog Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Frogston in the parish of Liberton, Midlothian, once a small hamlet of which not a vestige now remains, probably derived its name from Alexander Frog who had a grant in 1447 to farm the lands of Straiton with power "to big ane mill" (Good, Liberton in ancient and modern times, p. 149). The name of the hamlet survives in Frogston Brae. Mr. John Frog, vicar of Inverkeithing in 1509 (Inverkeithing, p. 235) is doubtless the John Frog who witnessed a tack by the abbot of Cupar in 1521 (SCM., V, p. 294). Bessie Froge was tenant of the Terroris Croft within Mussilbrughe schyere in 1561 (RD., p. 430). William Froge, indweller in Edinburgh, 1667 (Edin. App.). Lower says a John Frog lived in Oxfordshire in the time of Edward Longshanks.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

One John Frog flourished, appropriately enough, under King Edward Longshanks, in the green pastures of Newington, co. Oxford. H.R. ii. 761; and Burke's Armory gives the ensigns armorial of Frogg; but whether the name has descended, or rather leaped down, to modem times, I am unable to determine.
