Most probably derived from the small place named Frude in the parish of Tweedsmuir, Peeblesshire. A resignation of land in Dumfries in favor of Thomas Frude is recorded in 1544 (Anderson), Cuthbert Frud signed the Hand of Dumfries in 1570 (RPC., XIV, p. 66), and another Thomas Frude was "reader" in Quhittinghame in 1574 (RMR.). James Frude was witness to an asserance by John Maxwell, earl of Morton, in 1585 (Annandale, I, p. 49). Helene Fruid is recorded in Blackshaw in 1628 (Dumfries), William Fruid in Harlaw in 1637 (Lauder), and Jean Frood or Fruid in Drumalban in 1681 (Lanark CR.).
