Fruk Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

For information about the meaning of this surname look in "Fruk". Frug is older variant of the common north Croatian surname Fruk. Today there is not one bearer of surname Frug in Croatia, because all of them changed into Fruk before the time of mandatory registration of all the residents of the State. I see that surname "Frug" nowadays exist only in USA, so I can conclude that this families are descendants of North Croats who migrated in USA long ago and were not covered by this change in speech.I also wish to stress that Fruk, Frug and similar surnames derived from "free" as well as given names with the same meaning Franjo, Frank, Franz, Francisco, Francis etc. have nothing in common with Muslim name and surname Faruk. Name Faruk in arab means "one who differs (truth from a lie)". (all books about arab names say so, I personally don't know arab language and I can't tell you more then it's written in dictionaries.) Faruk is common name amongst Muslims in Bosnia, which has long border with Croatia, so this two names often meet in this parts of the world. My private letter to Forebears admins: the last part about the difference between Fruk and Faruk you can put under Fruk.

In the area of today's North Croatia, in middle Ages, surname Fruk came from "franc", meaning "frei", "free".

Fruk was a man who did not belong to a feudal, who had no master. The given name for a "free man" became Franjo, among the speakers of Germanic languages it is Frank, Franck, Franco and similar. In Serbia given name Franjo, Frank is "Slobodan", what literally means: "one that is free".From the same root "free", "frei" are place names Frankreich - France, Frankish empire, town Frankfurt, mountain located on the border of Serbia and Croatia called "Fruška gora" (Mountain of Fruks/Frugs/Franks) etc. Older variant of this Slavic surname is "Frug", but in the north Croatian Kajkavian language it was changed in Fruk before the time of registering all surnames. I see that surname "Frug" nowadays exist only in USA, so I can conclude that this families are descendants of Croats who moved there long ago.
