Fullerton Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This, like MacCloy, is a sept of the clan Stuart of Bute, Fullartor. being a town in Scotland. Fullertons are numerous in Ulster, particularly in Antrim and Down. In the birth registrations for 1865, 23 are recorded (17 spelt Fullerton and 6 Fullarton) 19 of these being in Ulster; in 1890 the returns were much the same-25 births, 22 in Ulster, mostly in Antrim and Down. According to Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland the founder of the best known family of the name in this country was Nicholas Fullerton, of Drummond, Co. Derry, whose nephew Col. Adam Fullerton acquired more property in the same county. Burke's General Armory states that the first of the family in Ireland was Fergus Fullerton who came from Scotland in the reign of James I. The earliest of note was James Fullerton who first appears on the Irish scene as master of the Free School, Dublin, in 1588 where he taught James Ussher: he was one of the first Fellows of Dublin University. He later became a commissioner for the Plantation of Ulster in 1607 and died in 1631. I presume this is the same James Fullerton who got a grant of the Wardenship of Youghal College, with the lands appertaining to it, in 1603. A James Fullerton is also mentioned in a Fiant of 1593 as standing bond for a number of Roscommon men in that year.
