User-submitted Reference
Comes from Anglo-Saxon "Fuhr" meaning "Furrow" and "Lang" meaning "Long", "Fuhrlang". This changed over time to "Furlong". Although Anglo-Saxon, it is common in Ireland due to migrating there, and as the country was profoundly Catholic, the name spread due to a high birth rate. The name then spread to America through the Irish migration in the 1800s.
