FUTHIE: An old Angus surname. Patricius Fothe was 'seruiens episcope Sancti Andree,' 1227 (RAA., I, p. 163). David de Futy or Fothy appears in 1332 and following years as custumar of Aberdeen (ER., I, p. 436,492), and in 1342 as charter witness (REA., p. 72). Laurence de Foty was provost of Abetdeen, 1367—68. He may be the Laurence Foty or de Futy, burgess of Aberdeen, 1390, who appears again in 1403 when he grants a charter to his son, John de Foty, and another in favor of the Carmelites of Aberdeen (REA., I, p. 189; CAB., p. 423; Friars, p. 23), and held land in Aberdeen, 1413 (RMS., I, 943). William Futy was illegally arrested at Lowestoft, 1405 (Bain, IV, 690). Patrick Futhie of Futhie's Milne was summoned for treason in 1592 (APS., III, p. 528), James Futhie was indweller in Krkwall, Orkney, 1612 (MCM., II. p. 157), and another James Futhie was precentor in Dundee, 1655 (Inquis., 3985). Persons of this name were followers of the Ogilvies in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The name sometimes takes the form of Fodie, and perhaps Fode.
