Fyan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The name Fyan is on record in Dublin since the fifteenth century: John Fyan was mayor in 1472 and 1479, and others of the family were later mayors and aldermen of the city, one of whom was outlawed as a Jacobite, though this outlawry was later reversed. From them was named Fyan's Castle (subsequently renamed Proudfoot's Castle) on the Quays: it would appear that like many successful merchant families the Fyans became in due course landed gentry, for two townlands in Co. Meath are called Fyanstown. Woulfe gives Faghan for Fyan, and treats Paghan (Poyne, Pyne) and Phaghan (Fyans, Foynes) and even the better known Fagan (Irish Families p. 87) as variants of the one name, deriving them all from the Latin paganus. He makes a slip in stating that Fyans occurs several times in the list of mayors of Limerick in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, for the mayors in question were named Poines.

As Fyans the name survives in small numbers in Dublin and neighbouring counties.
