Gaine Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the second of these names the prefix O has been almost entirely dropped: the Gaelic Irish form of it is Ó Geibheannaigh (see More Irish Families p. 153): this Geaney has always been found mainly in counties Cork and Kerry, where the abbreviated variant Geane or Gaine is not uncommon.
Early anglicized forms of the name were O'Giany etc. —— Father Roger O'Giana, for example, was captured by the English in 1599 and thrown into Cork prison whence he managed to escape. The Mac prefix, on the other hand, has been usually retained. MacGeany, which is much less numerous than (0) Geany, and quite distinct from it, belongs now to south Ulster. Woulfe suggests as a possibility that MacGeany is an anglicized form of Mag Éanna which he says is a variant of Mac Eanna (i.e. MacKeaney): Mac Geibheannaigh might be considered more likely, but the only early anglicized form of this I have found, viz. MacGebenay, is the name of a man who obtained a “pardon” in 1590 in Co.
Roscommon.
(English) the Anglo-Saxon pers. name Gegn or Gen (as seen in Ge(g)nes-burh (Gainsborough) = ‘Ge(g)n’s Stronghold.’) [prob. Old English gegn, straight, direct]
