From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A descriptive name from Gaelic gearr, 'short.' Gair of Nigg was the name of an old family (Stodart), and there ere still families of this name in Ross and Sutherland. One of the most celebrated of the name was the noted reiver and pirate, spoken of in Gaelic song and story as 'Mac Iain Ghiorr' (CG., II, p. 284). Tarmot Ger had a remission for his part in the hership of Kenlochow and Trouternes in 1541 (RSS., II, 3943). Alexander Gar was charter witness and juror in Dornoch, 1535 and 1545 (OPS, II, p. 639,641). Alexander Gar in Meikle Terrall was witness to a Denoon of Cadboll charter in 1561. Alexander Gair in Stianarn was a retainer of Macintosh of Dunnachton, Inverness, in 1607. Ewin McVean Gair in Urquhart was fined for resetting Clan Gregor in 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 629), and John Dow Gair, a Macgregor, was slain at Enzie, 1641. Thomas Gaire, "a chapman that carries a wallett throw the countrey," was made councillor of Cromarty in 1669 (RPC., 3. ser. III). Andrew Gair was tidewaiter in Dundee, 1726 (Brechin). The surname Gair in the Shedand Islands may be from the ON. personal name Geirr, but it is more likely to have been introduced from the mainland like so many other Orkney and Shetland surnames. Robert Gyre in the parish of Nesting, 1625 (Shetland). Hugh Gair was a travelling chapman in Huntly, 1770 (Aberdeen CR), and Iain Dubh Gearr Macgregor was composer of the "Reel of Tulloch" (Macgregor, I, p. 193).
