Gajić Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Gajić, Gajović, and Gaić are patronymic surnames, derived from male ancestor's nickname Gajo or Gaja. Gaja can derive from an old Slavic dialect and mean 'small woods' or 'forest around the stream in valley' (gaj). Also it can derive from verb gajiti, meaning 'upbringing', 'to look after someone'. The Greek name Gaia is mostly epic, meaning 'Earth', a word of uncertain origin. Maybe it has pre-Greek origin. It, however, could be related to the Avestan word gaiia, meaning 'life', totality of creatures, or Avestan gairi, meaning 'mountain'.
