Galilee Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the galilee,' a surname of exceptional interest which has barely survived. The galilee of our cathedrals is founded no doubt on the phrase, 'Galilee of the Gentiles' (Matt. iv. 15). It was a porch or chapel attached to a church and used as a penitentiary, and even as a mortuary. A galilee exists at Lincoln, Ely, and Durham cathedrals. At times they seem to have been set apart for women, who were restricted within certain limits. My first instance is general; all the others no doubt owe their origin to the galilee in Durham Cathedral. I was quite delighted, in a visit to Tynemouth, to find the name still existing in the neighbourhood of Newcastle. Galley, as will be seen below, is a corruption. Probably the founder was verger of the galilee, or dwelt under the shadow.
William de la Galilye, Close Rolls, 11 Edward III.
'Cardinal Langley was buried in the Galilee at Durham,' 1437: History Newcastle and Gateshead.
Bishop Neville re-quested with his dying breath to be buried in the Galilee, near the tomb of the Venerable Bede, 1457: ibid.
John Galilee, 1498: History Newcastle and Gateshead.
Dominus John Galilee, 1502, Chantrypriest of St. Nicholas, Newcastle: ibid.
James Galilee, 1535: ibid.
Robert Galilee, cantarist in chantry at Gateshead Ch., 1535: ibid.
John Gallale, tanner, 1539: ibid.Stolen from Fore bears
Robert Galilee, of Lintz Green, wheelwright, 1539: ibid.
'I forgive John Galley, 40l. I forgive Robert Galley,' 1551.
(This last item is from a will quoted by the editor who identifies these two names as members of the Galilee family: ibid. ii. 280.) A friend of mine had an acquaintance with a Galilee in Newcastle, a retired sea-captain, who was living in 1886.
(Hebrew) Dweller at, or Keeper of, a Galilee, i.e., a porch or chapel attached to some principal churches and used for such varied purposes as a penitentiary, a mortuary, and a place of reception for females having business with the ecclesiastics [from the Palestinian place- name, which means ‘a circuit’-Hebrew Gálíl, whence Greek Γαλιλαία]
From the Old Norse, Galli, Gallðr; nickname from the Dutch, Gallé, Gallee, Galjee; from the Flemish, Gali; from the French, Gailly, Gailliet, Gailliez, Gaillait; from the German, Galley; a personal name.
