Gallie Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the galilee,' a surname of exceptional interest which has barely survived. The galilee of our cathedrals is founded no doubt on the phrase, 'Galilee of the Gentiles' (Matt. iv. 15). It was a porch or chapel attached to a church and used as a penitentiary, and even as a mortuary. A galilee exists at Lincoln, Ely, and Durham cathedrals. At times they seem to have been set apart for women, who were restricted within certain limits. My first instance is general; all the others no doubt owe their origin to the galilee in Durham Cathedral. I was quite delighted, in a visit to Tynemouth, to find the name still existing in the neighbourhood of Newcastle. Galley, as will be seen below, is a corruption. Probably the founder was verger of the galilee, or dwelt under the shadow.

Bishop Neville re-quested with his dying breath to be buried in the Galilee, near the tomb of the Venerable Bede, 1457: ibid.

Dominus John Galilee, 1502, Chantrypriest of St. Nicholas, Newcastle: ibid.
James Galilee, 1535: ibid.
Robert Galilee, cantarist in chantry at Gateshead Ch., 1535: ibid.

Robert Galilee, of Lintz Green, wheelwright, 1539: ibid.
'I forgive John Galley, 40l. I forgive Robert Galley,' 1551.
(This last item is from a will quoted by the editor who identifies these two names as members of the Galilee family: ibid. ii. 280.) A friend of mine had an acquaintance with a Galilee in Newcastle, a retired sea-captain, who was living in 1886.
In the Gaelic of Sutherland Gallaich is the collective name for the people of Caithness as being foreigners, i.e. (mainly) of Norse origin. On the expulsion of the Gunns from Caithness soon after 1589 many of them found asylum in Ross-shire, chiefly about Tain, and the collective name became their sername. "About the middle of the seventeenth century a Sir John Sinclair, in Caithness, became proprietor of the lands of Culiss and Wester Rarichie. This led to the introduction into the parish of verous individuals of the name of Gunn from the boundary that separates Caithness from Sutherland. The people of the parish called them 'na gallaich' (or strangers); and from this arose the name Gallie, which has been for nearly 200 years a common and rather respectable name among the inhabitants. The name is now, however much on the decrease" (New statistical account of Ross and Cromarty), Gallies are therefore reckoned a sept of the Gunns. (2) Gallie is also found as a surname in Ayrshire and the west, with the meaning of 'stranger' (galIda). The tenement of Patrick Gallie in Irvine is mentioned in 1426 (Irvine, II, p. 130). Donald Gallie appears in Ardroskitill in 1620 (Sasines, II, 81), and Finlay Gallie in Iskichragane in 1662 (Isles). John Galie (Galy, Gelie, or Gely) in Barmoire. Bute, and his wife were accused of being witches in 1662 (HP, III). The name in Bute was afterwards spelled Gillies. In Ulster Gallie has been softened to Gailey.
(Celtic) = Gall (q.v.) + the pers. suff. -ach] (Anglo-French-Latin) metonymic for Galley-Man [Middle English galeie, Old French galie, Low Latin galea, a galley] These were commonly called gallie- men, as men that came up in the gallies, who brought up wines and other merchandizes, which they landed in Thames-strete, at a place called Galley- key.—Stowe, Survey of London, 1599. (Anglo-Hebrew) for Galilee, q.v.
