Galliett Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The current spelling in my branch of the family supposedly arose when the name "Galliet" was misspelled in a postmaster appointment certificate signed by the US President in 1893. Rather than make waves, the brothers all decided to add a "t" to the name.
In the mid-1800s, two brothers came from France to the US. The other brother spelled his name Gaillet - as was more common in France. It was pronounced Guy-A and no one in the US could spell it. So around 1900 they finally changed it to Giey.
Translation of Gaillet to English seems to mean cleaver - so perhaps they were ancient butchers.
How Brazilians acquired the name Galliett is anyone's guess.
