Variant of Gaul, Gauld, which see. William Galt, bailie of Perth, 1367 (ER., II, p. 285). John Galt and Alexander Galt were admitted burgesses of Aberdeen, 1437 (NSCM., I, p. 5), and in 1450 there is record of a charter of sale by a burgess Alexander Galt (Friars, p. 33). Laurence Galt, priest of the diocese of Glasgow, 1525 (HP., IV, p. 25). Patrick Gow McEan Galt in Torren of Strathdon was fined in 1613 for reset of Clan Gregor (RPC., XIV, p. 631), individuals of the name are recorded in Irvine, 1616 (Inquis. Tut., 228—230), Robert Galt was retoured heir of Robert Galt in Corsehill-Kilwinning, his father, 1642 (Retours, Ayr, 366), and Alexander Galt was pursued for eaten corn and grass, 1674 (Corsehill p. 121).
