From the town of Galway in Ireland-one of the very few local surnames that have originated in that country. The family are a branch of De Burgh. John de B., younger brother of Ulick de B., ancestor of the Marquis of Clanriearde, having accredited the bills of the citizens of Galway, was commonly known as Sir John de Galway.
