(English) a nickname from the Male Goose [Old English gandra, a gander]
The bird. The name of the celebrated Genseric, the Vandal chief, is believed to be Teutonic, and to signify like the modern Germ, ganserich, a gander. Why (as Prof. Donaldson remarks) a great warrior should bear such a name is not very obvious; "but, if anyone feels disposed to smile at such a title, he may correct the impression by recollecting that names of birds are not always imposed on the principles suggested by our modern associations." Cambridge Essays, 1856, p. 42. The professor proceeds to exemplify his observation in Attila's chief opponent, Aetius, 'the aquiline,' synonymous with Orloff, the name of the Russian plenipotentiary at the Congress of Paris. In like manner Woronzow, a name equally well known in recent history, means "raven like;" and the classical as well as the modern nomenclature of families supplies us with numerous analogies. It must not be forgotten, however, that gandr in Old Norse means a wolf.
Some derive this name from the bird. Grimm also refers the name of the great Vandal chief Genseric to gänserich, a gander. Gander is more probably from Old Norse gandr, a wolf. Gandr occurs as a surname in the Landnamabok.
Or le Ganter (Rotuli Hundredorum), the designation of some Norman-French maker of gloves.
Gander is a name that has its present home in the district of Hayward's Heath. It was also a Hampshire name. John Gander was twice mayor of Winchester in the reign of Henry VII. (Milner's "Winchester.").
