As tavern gave us Taverner, the keeper of a tavern, so ganock gave us Ganocker, the keeper of a ganock. The Proclamation of the Mayor of Norwich on coming into office set forth 'that all Brewsters and Gannokers selle a gallon of ale, of the best,': 1424 (FF.) 'Ganneker (ganokyr), ganearia '(Prom Parv). 'Gannok, standard, ensign' (Halliwell). 'Gannoker, an innkeeper' (ibid). Hence the local surname, 'at the ganock.'
