From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Of territorial origin from the lands, now district, of Garioch in Aberdeenshire. Waldevus de Garviacht witnessed a charter by Hugh Freskyn c. 1211 (CSR., I, p. 8). Andrew de Garuiach appeals as sheriff of Aberdeen in 1264 and 1266 (ER., I, p. 11, 34). Sir Andrew de Garuiach, probably the same person, witnessed a charter by Alexander Cumyng, earl of Buchan in 1272 (REA., I, p. 34). Adam de Caruiagh of the county of Edinbergh rendered homage for his lands in 1296. His seal bears a fluer-de-lys and the legend S' Adami de Garviau (Bain, II, p. 201,546). Andrew de Garviaghe and Sir John de Garviaghe of the county of Aberdene also rendered homage in the same year (ibid., II, p. 195,203, 207). In 1342 the entry of ward and marriage of the daughter of Sir James de Garuyach was sold to Sir Thomas de Carnato (ER., I, p. 503), and in 1380 Andrew de Garwyach made a grant of lands in the barony of Rothienormond to Stephen Clerk, his son-in-law (Rothes, p. 494). William Gariach was admitted bergess of Aberdeen in 1475, another William Gareache in 1486, Thomas Geratht in 1491, and James Gereaucht in 1525 (NSCM., I, p. 24, 32, 36, 48). Jhone Gareok of Home was member of assize, Orkney, 1509 (OSR., I, p. 252). Magnus Gariach was respited for his share in the slaughter of John Erle of Cathnes in 1539 (RSS., II, 3151). William Gareauch was "reidare" at Roscoby in 1574 (Misc. Wodrow Soc., p. 351), George Gareauche was a trade burgess of Aberdeen in 1642 (ROA., I, p. 232), and Alexander Garioch was minister at Cushnie in 1647 (Strathbogie, p. 76).
