Although I have no absolute proof to adduce, I cannot hesitate to assert that this is the Old French Guarinot, just as Warnett is Warinot. the English dress of the same name (v. Wareing and Warinot). Assuredly it is a font-name, or the pet form of a font-name. An inspeximus of the charter of the manor of Ulverton, 10 Henry IV, is witnessed among others by 'Garnet our Forester' (West's Ant. of Furness)

William Gernet of Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). William de Chernet was of Hants 1086 (Domesd.). William G. was of Bedford, Alexander and Geoftry of Essex 1165 (Liber Niger). Alexander had estates in Lancashire, and was dead before 1202, when Matthew Gernet obtained seizin of his lands (Rotulus Cancellarii). The family long flourished in Lancashire. Henry Gernet was Viscount of Essex and Herts, 1341.
