Garside Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the garth-side,' i.e. living at the side of the garth, the yard or orchard.

Richard atte Garthend, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

This surname first dropped the A, secondly the f, and is now almost universally Garside. 'In the reign of Edward I lived Sir Baldwin Teutonicus, ... who granted to Sir Robert de Holland, in free marriage with Joan, his daughter, all his lands in Butterworth, the Cleggs, Garthside, Akedene, Holynworth, and Halght in Rochdale' (Baines' Lancashire). I believe Garthside lay in Crompton, between Rochdale and Oldham. The surname arose there, and still lives in the district. An article in an Oldham newspaper in 1879, which I have misplaced, entitled 'Old Homesteads,' quoted an entry relating to Robert de Garcesside, 6 Edward III.

Alice Garside, of Oldham, widow, 1597: Wills at Chester.

John Gartside, of Saddleworth, 1597: ibid.

Thomas Gartside, of Deanshaw, husbandman, 1593: ibid.

'James Gaitsyde, for xxu in goods, xs.' (Spotland) Subsidy Roll, 1541, Salford Hundred: Lancashire and Cheshire Record Society.

Oddly enough, the full form still exists in Liverpool. I had thought it long extinct. Probably it is a modern restoration.
