Simon de Garentuly who witnessed an agreement relating to lands in the diocese of Moray in 1229 (REM., p. 26), as Simon de Garentuli witnessed a charter of tofts of Inuerberuyn and Inueruri c. 1232—37 (LAC., p. 22). Andrew de Garyntuly, cleric in the diocese of Moray, 1258 (REM., 122) is probably Andrew de Garentuly, clericus regis Alexander III, in record in 1272 (REA., I, p. 29). Patricius Garntuly in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 312), Sir Patrick Garntuly, rector of Glass, 1484, and Master James Grantulie, parson of Glas, 1537 (Aboyne, p. 24, 68), John Grantullie, notary in Aberdeen, 1633 (RSCA., p. 493). James Gairtlie was chirurgian in Edinburgh in 1627 (Edinb. Marr.), Andrew Gairtlay was stabler in Perth in 1657 (Dunkeld), William Gartly was member of Huntly Corps of Volunteers in 1805 (Will, p. 30), and two brothers of the name from Auchterless served in the first Great Wer (Turriff).
