GARTNAIT: The name of several Pictish kings. Gartnait mac Cannech gave the lands of Petmeccobrig to the Abbey of Deer (Bk. Deer, III, 1). Cartnet or Gratney earl of Mar, succeeded to the tide in 1297. But little is known of him except that in his father's lifetime he earned the thanks of Edwerd I for his zeal in supporting the English authority in the north.

GARTNAIT: The name of several Pictish kings. Gartnait mac Cannech gave the lands of Petmeccobrig to the Abbey of Deer (Bk. Deer, III, 1). Cartnet or Gratney earl of Mar, succeeded to the tide in 1297. But little is known of him except that in his father's lifetime he earned the thanks of Edwerd I for his zeal in supporting the English authority in the north. He is the common ancestor through his son, Donald, and his daughter, Elyne, of all the subsequent earls of Mar. William filius Gartaneti, pistor, in Kyregat, Aberdeen, is in record, 1317 (SCM., V, p. 11). The exact meaning of the name is not cleer. Gartnet and Gartenethe 1297.
