From Irish O'Garbhain, 'descendant of Gerbhan.' Hew Garvan, tailor, was burgess of Glasgow, 1594, and William Garvane, flesher, was burgess in 1623 (Burgesses). Hew Garvene was notary public in Irvine, 1601 (Irvine, I. p. 95), and Ninian Garven, heir of Patrick Garven in Dykheid-Eglintoun, 1618 (Inquis., 726) may be the Ninian Garvan who was retoured heir of Hugh Garvan, cleric, burgess of Irvine, his father, 1629 (Retours, Ayr, 260). Elizabeth Gerveine was retoured heir of Patrick Garveine in Dykeheid-Eglintoun, Ayr, 1649 (Retours, Ayr, 433), Hew Garvane and three other Garvanes were jurors on an inquest at Dawray, 1669 (Corsehill, p. 86), Thomas Garvan was bailie of the burgh of Air, 1672 (Inquis., 5555), and the surname is found in Edinburgh in 1649 as Garven (Edinb.
