William Gervie, gardener at Lochwood, 1741 (Dumfries). compare Garvie.
Said to be from Gaelic garbh "large, harsh" as a nickname, but no proof offered. Most probably a shortening of (Mac)carvie, which see. The Garvies carry three garvies (a species of sprat) in their arms, but such canting heraldry is of no historical value. The arms were registered in Lyon Herald's Office, Edinburgh, before 1723. John Garwy was shepherd in Clony, 1512 (Rent. Dunk., p. 183). Janet Garvie is in Hauchhead of Guthrie in 1613, and three of the name in the same district (Brechin). Seven of the name are in the Aberdeen Directory.
