Probably a form of Gastnell, or Gastinel. Richard and Wido Wastinel of Normandy 1180- 95, Richard and William W. 1198 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). William Gastinel is mentioned in 1070, Gerard Gastinel 1080 (Ord. Vitalis, 575,576). The family is said to have been originally of Anjou (Des Bois). Richard Wastinell occurs in England 1199 (Rotuli Curiae Regis).
